About Chaiyo Bar
What is Chaiyo Bar?
Chaiyo Bar is a kulhad chai, coffee and shakes counter in Bargarh, Odisha, with two outlets: one near the Private Bus Stand and one at the Gandhi Park gate beside Kali Mandir. We brew Kolkata-style chai in unglazed terracotta kulhads, boil coffee on the counter, and blend thick shakes to order. Most cups land between ₹10 and ₹65.
Why is Chaiyo Bar called a kulhad chai shop?
Because the chai is served in a kulhad, an unglazed terracotta cup made in Bargarh's own pottery belt, and it is poured directly from a boiling pot rather than brewed in a kettle and decanted. The clay gives the tea an earthy note that a steel or glass vessel cannot, and it is the reason we do not use paper cups on the chai counter.
Which is the best kulhad tea in Bargarh?
At Chaiyo Bar it is the Bargadiya Special Chai, our house blend of strong CTC with fresh ginger, served at ₹10 for a small kulhad and ₹20 for a large. If you want something milder, ask for Malai Chai (₹20); if you want the old clay-pot route, go for a Desi Kawah (₹30), brewed in a clay pot over charcoal.
How many chai flavours does Chaiyo Bar serve?
Twenty-two, across six families: six signature chai, six flavour chai (pan, rose, chocolate, vanilla, mango and saffron), four masala chai, and six green, black and kawah teas. Vanilla is the most ordered flavour and the Bargadiya Special is the most ordered single cup.

Menu and prices
Is Chaiyo Bar open late?
Both outlets run from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, every day of the week, including Sunday and public holidays. The Gandhi Park counter is the busier of the two in the evening, because it sits directly on the park gate.
Does Chaiyo Bar deliver?
No. We are a walk-up counter with no delivery fleet, and we would rather not pretend otherwise. The two outlets sit on opposite sides of the main Bazar, so one of them is almost always closer than a rider would be.
What does a kulhad chai cost at Chaiyo Bar?
₹10 for a small kulhad, ₹20 for a large, across the signature chai range. Flavour chai such as rose, pan and vanilla is ₹15 each. Desi Kawah is ₹30 and Kashmiri Kawah is ₹50. Prices are on the full menu page and have not changed since 2024.
Can I get coffee at Chaiyo Bar?
Yes. Hot coffee is boiled on the counter rather than dispensed from a machine: normal coffee ₹15/₹30, elaichi ₹20, chocolate ₹20 and ginger ₹25. Cold coffee runs ₹50 to ₹100 depending on the ice cream and dry fruit toppings.
Is there a good place for shakes in Bargarh?
Chaiyo Bar blends six thick shakes to order, served with a striped straw: Oreo, Kitkat and 5 Star, each with vanilla or chocolate ice cream, ₹60 to ₹90. They are blended rather than mixed from a syrup, so they take a couple of minutes.

Visiting us
Where exactly is the Chaiyo Bar outlet near the bus stand?
It is on the Bazar side of the Private Bus Stand, right beside Reliance Trends. You cannot miss it: the signboard is lit and there is usually a crowd on the plastic chairs outside. The Gandhi Park outlet is the other one, at the park gate near Kali Mandir.
What is kulhad chai in Bargarh?
Kulhad chai in Bargarh is chai poured into an unglazed terracotta cup, straight from the boiling pot rather than from a jug. At Chaiyo Bar every one of our 22 chai flavours is served this way, at both the Private Bus Stand and the Gandhi Park outlet, from ₹10 for a small kulhad. The clay holds heat far longer than steel and gives the tea the earthy note people associate with chai from this part of Odisha.
Is Chaiyo Bar a cafe in Bargarh?
It is a chai bar rather than a cafe: a walk-up roadside counter with pavement seating, no indoor area, no Wi-Fi and no air conditioning. What you get that a cafe does not is 22 chai flavours in real kulhads, kawah brewed in a clay pot over charcoal, and coffee boiled on the counter. If you want chai, coffee and shakes in Bargarh, it is the cheapest place in the city to get all three.
How do I reach Chaiyo Bar from the railway station?
The Gandhi Park outlet is the closer one. It sits at the park gate beside Kali Mandir, about a fifteen-minute walk from Bargarh railway station. From the Private Bus Stand, walk fifty metres towards Reliance Trends and the counter is directly beside that store.
Is Chaiyo Bar suitable for families?
Yes. Both counters are roadside stalls with seating on the pavement, so a family can sit together, and children usually order vanilla chai or a cold coffee rather than a shake. There is no separate family section.
Do you take UPI at Chaiyo Bar?
Yes, Google Pay, PhonePe and any UPI app works at both counters, and cash is of course fine. The whole order usually comes to well under ₹200 for two people.

Kulhad, kawah and cups
What is the difference between kulhad chai and mug chai?
Kulhad chai is brewed in a boiling pot and served in an unglazed terracotta cup; mug chai is brewed in a kettle and served in a steel or glass mug. The kulhad keeps the pour hotter for longer and adds an earthy note from the clay. A cup bought in a disposable paper cup is the third category, and it is the one that gets cold fastest. Chaiyo Bar serves chai in kulhads and malai chai in a mug, because milk-heavy pours need a vessel you can hold.
What is kawah tea?
Kawah is a clay-pot brew. Leaf is boiled hard in a pot with milk and sugar over a flame until the volume drops and the surface froths, then the pot is tipped straight into a cup. It is stronger and sweeter than regular chai and tastes faintly of the pot. Chaiyo Bar serves Desi Kawah at ₹30, Kadak Ginger Kawah at ₹30 and Kashmiri Kawah at ₹50.
Is a kulhad cup safe to drink from?
Yes. A kulhad is unglazed but not unglazed-and-dirty; it is fired clay, and ours are washed and replaced throughout the day rather than left out. The reason kulhad chai shops have survived for a century in Bengal and Odisha is that the cup is a food vessel, not decoration.
How strong is masala chai?
Stronger than most hotel chai, because the leaf is boiled in the pot rather than infused. At Chaiyo Bar the normal masala chai is ₹10 and the Bombay masala is ₹15, which is the heavier, pepper-forward version. Ask for half sugar if you find it too much.
Section 5 of 6
Coffee and shakes
What does a cold coffee cost?
₹50 for a plain cold coffee with no ice cream, then ₹60 with vanilla ice cream, ₹65 for a chocolate cold coffee with vanilla ice cream, ₹80 for a chocolate cold coffee with chocolate ice cream, and ₹100 for the dry fruits cold coffee.
Can I order a kulhad chai to take away?
You can, and it travels well for about twenty minutes because of the clay. The kulhad is meant to be drunk in, so we do not pack a kulhad for a long drive. For takeaway we would suggest the kawah in a paper cup instead.
What is the best chai for a first visit to Bargarh?
The Bargadiya Special at ₹10. It is the cup that regulars order, it is cheap enough that ordering it twice does not hurt, and it is the one that shows what a Bargarh kulhad chai is supposed to taste like before you go looking for something more elaborate.

Practical details
Is Chaiyo Bar suitable for late-night chats?
Yes. Both counters stay open to 11:00 pm and the seating is informal plastic chairs on the pavement. It is one of the few places in Bazar where you can sit with a cup for an hour without anyone rushing you.
Do you have Wi-Fi or a card machine?
No Wi-Fi and no card machine. We take cash and UPI. There is no seating indoors to speak of, just the pavement chairs outside each counter.
How do I get there from Bargarh bus stand?
From the Private Bus Stand, walk about fifty metres towards the Reliance Trends store; the counter is directly beside it. If you are coming from the railway station, the Gandhi Park outlet is closer, at the park gate near Kali Mandir. Both are on the main Bazar and walkable from each other in about ten minutes.
Do you cater for parties or bulk orders?
Not as a formal service, but for twenty cups or more, call the outlet a day ahead and we will keep the masala and the kulhads ready. There is no private seating area.
What is the best time to visit without a queue?
Between 11:30 am and 4:00 pm on a weekday. After 6 pm in the evening, especially at Gandhi Park, there is usually a queue at the Gandhi Park outlet. Mornings are quiet at both.
