Best Chai in Odisha: 7 Spots Worth the Detour
Chai in Odisha is not one thing. From Puri beach counters to the Bargarh kulhad bars and Bhubaneswar morning carts, here are seven…
Famous chai in Bargarh, ranked by the people who live here: the famous tea stalls at the bus stand, the famous kulhad tea spots near Gandhi Park, and how to find each one.

Bargarh is not a big city, and it does not need a list of fifty places. There are maybe four or five spots that people here actually name out loud when you ask for famous tea in Bargarh — to a visitor, to a friend, or as an answer to “where do I go?”. Here they are.
The short answer: the famous tea in Bargarh is a small kulhad of chai boiled hard and poured into unglazed terracotta. Chaiyo Bar has two counters for it — one beside Reliance Trends at the Private Bus Stand, one at the Gandhi Park gate near Kali Mandir — both open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm daily, with 22 chai flavours from ₹10.
Fame in a place like Bargarh is not earned by marketing. It comes from three things: being in a spot people pass every day, making one thing well enough that people have a reason to detour, and staying open long enough to be there at both ends of the day.
The stalls that fail on the second one are the ones that disappear. You can find decent chai in Bargarh on any given street. Finding the same good chai in the same place for fifteen years is the thing that is actually hard, and it is what the locals are really pointing at when they name a stall.
The short answer: beside Reliance Trends at the Private Bus Stand. Open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm daily. Twenty-two chai flavours in kulhads, from ₹10. Both an Instagram stop and a regular standing counter.
This is the one visitors find first, because the signboard is lit, the storefront is garlanded with marigolds, and there are usually people on the plastic chairs outside. It is also the one with the widest range in the city, which is what earns it a 4.8-star average across 59 Google reviews.
Order the Bargadiya Special (₹10/₹20). If the child with you will not drink plain chai, the flavour chai are ₹15 each and the vanilla is the one that works.
The second outlet is at the Gandhi Park gate, near Kali Mandir, and it is the evening one. The park fills up from about six, which is why this counter gets busy when the bus stand one is winding down.
Same menu, same prices, same kulhads. The difference is atmosphere: lit signage, more evening footfall, and somewhere to sit for an hour without anyone rushing you.

Not famous by name the way the counters are, but famous for one cup. The kawah stalls around the market road boil leaf in a clay pot over a flame until it reduces and froths, then tip it straight into a cup. ₹20 to ₹30, usually sweeter than you expect.
If somebody local offers you a kawah, take it. It is the most distinctly Odisha drink on this list and the one least likely to be on a menu written in English.
Small corners in the older Bazar with no signage, one chai, and a shelf of clay cups. ₹10. They are not famous to outsiders and they do not need to be, but they have the deepest local following of anything on this list because the people who run them have run them for years.
The carts on the Sambalpur road and around the bus-stand approach. The lowest prices in the city, the fastest service, no seating. ₹10 for a kulhad of strong sweet chai.
This is the stop for a quick cup between buses. It is not the stop for a long conversation, and the locals will tell you so.
Ask for “bargarh chai” rather than a brand name — you will get directions instead of a brand argument. If you are at the bus stand, walk towards Reliance Trends; if you are at the railway station, the Gandhi Park outlet is closer. And if you are being offered a chai by somebody who lives here, order what they order. That has never been wrong yet.
Two practical notes if you are planning this as a best tea in Bargarh stop rather than a quick cup. First, the kulhad is meant to be drunk in: a real kulhad holds heat for about twenty minutes, a paper cup for five, so there is no rush either way. Second, if you are looking for a tea stall in Bargarh that does one thing extremely well, the kawah carts on the Sambalpur road are the ones people drive out of their way for. If you want variety under one roof, both Chaiyo Bar counters will do it.
Chaiyo Bar is the one most often named by visitors, with 4.8 stars across 59 Google reviews, because it has the widest flavour range in the city. Among locals the older Bazar counters have their own fame, and the kawah stalls are known for one specific cup rather than for variety.
Famous kulhad tea in Bargarh means chai poured into an unglazed terracotta cup straight from a boiling pot. The famous version of it in this city is the Bargadiya Special Chai at Chaiyo Bar, a strong CTC Assam with fresh ginger, served at ₹10 for a small kulhad and ₹20 for a large. Both outlets pour all 22 of their chai flavours this way.
Chaiyo Bar, directly beside Reliance Trends at the Private Bus Stand. It is fifty metres from the stand itself, open from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, and the signboard is lit so it is visible in the dark.
Chaiyo Bar opens at 7:00 am and closes at 11:00 pm, every day, which covers both the morning crowd heading to the market and the evening sitting until late. The other long-running stalls in the Bazar open a little later in the morning and close earlier at night.
The two Chaiyo Bar counters are open until 11:00 pm, which is late for Bargarh. After that there is very little in the city, so plan accordingly if you want tea past eleven.
Come try it
Both our Bargarh outlets are open 7:00 am to 11:00 pm, every day. Ask for the Bargadiya Special in a kulhad and see whether you agree with us.
