Best Chai in Odisha: 7 Spots Worth the Detour
Chai in Odisha is not one thing. From Puri beach counters to the Bargarh kulhad bars and Bhubaneswar morning carts, here are seven…
Twelve blended drinks from Rs 50 to Rs 100, made to order rather than from a syrup bottle. What is in each one, which are worth it, and where to get them.

Chai is what Bargarh is known for, but in summer the line outside both our counters is mostly people ordering cold coffee and shakes. Here is the complete list, what is in each one, and which are worth the money.
Twelve drinks, ₹50 to ₹100, all blended to order. No syrups, no premixed bases — brewed coffee, real ice cream, ice, and whatever else is on the label.
| Drink | Ice cream | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Cold Coffee | None | ₹50 |
| Cold Coffee | Vanilla | ₹60 |
| Choco Cold Coffee | Vanilla | ₹65 |
| Cold Coffee | Chocolate | ₹80 |
| Choco Cold Coffee | Chocolate | ₹85 |
| Dry Fruits Cold Coffee | Vanilla | ₹100 |
| Oreo Shake | Vanilla | ₹60 |
| Oreo Shake | Chocolate | ₹80 |
| Kitkat Shake | Vanilla | ₹70 |
| Kitkat Shake | Chocolate | ₹90 |
| 5 Star Shake | Vanilla | ₹70 |
| 5 Star Shake | Chocolate | ₹90 |
The plain cold coffee at ₹50 is brewed coffee, chilled over ice and blended with a little sugar. It is the cheapest and the most refreshing, and it is the one people order when they have just walked here.
Adding ice cream is what turns it into a dessert drink and doubles the price. Vanilla is the default and chocolate is the upgrade most people take. The dry fruits cold coffee at ₹100 is the most expensive thing we serve and the one that has the most opinions about it — nut, dry fruit and chocolate ice cream, blended thick, closer to a kulfi than to a coffee.
Six shakes, three flavours — Oreo, Kitkat and 5 Star — each with vanilla or chocolate ice cream, ₹60 to ₹90. They are blended from scratch, which is why a shake takes a couple of minutes and a cold coffee takes about thirty seconds.
Oreo is the volume seller. Kitkat is the one people photograph. 5 Star with chocolate ice cream is the richest thing on the menu and the one most likely to be too much, which is exactly why people order it.
A syrup-based shake is faster, cheaper and consistent. It also tastes like syrup with a cold drink added, which is a different product from a shake. Since we already brew the coffee on the counter for hot coffee, we brew and chill it for cold as well, and scoop the ice cream when you order.
It costs us money and it costs you two minutes. That trade is the whole reason the place has a following among people who have tried the other counters in the city.
A plain cold coffee is ₹50, with vanilla ice cream ₹60, chocolate ice cream ₹80, chocolate cold coffee with vanilla ice cream ₹65, with chocolate ice cream ₹85, and the dry fruits cold coffee is ₹100.
The Oreo shake with vanilla ice cream at ₹60 is the most ordered. The 5 Star shake with chocolate ice cream at ₹90 is the richest, and the dry fruits cold coffee at ₹100 is the one worth saving an hour of your day for.
Yes — vanilla and chocolate ice cream is blended in, not whipped topping. The thick consistency is the point, which is why they are served with a striped straw and take a couple of minutes to blend.
Fresh. The coffee is brewed and chilled, the ice cream is scooped, and the whole thing is blended at the counter when you order. Nothing comes out of a premixed syrup bottle.
Come try it
